Arugula (Wild) | Arugula prefers a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Arugula can be densely planted together (4-6 inches apart). Avoid spray watering during day to prevent leaf burn. Water 3 times per week Harvest leaves that are at least 4 inches long continously all season. It's yellow flowers are also edible and add vibrant colour to salads. |
Basil (Genovese) | Genovese Basil prefers full sun and 6-8 inches of space in order to grow to its fullest potential. Give it fertile soil high in nitrogen to improve leaf colour and yield. Water 2-3 times per week. Harvest biggest leaves but don't remove too many as it will stunt growth. Pinch off tips long branches to encourage the plant to fill out. |
Basil (Dark Opal) | Dark Opal Basil likes to be planted in the sun and thrives in a window box or container. Give 6-8 inches of space to fully thrive and plant in well-draining soil. Water 2-3 times per week. Harvest biggest leaves but don't remove too many as it will stunt growth. Pinch off tips long branches to encourage the plant to fill out. |
Basil (Thai) | Thai Basil likes full sun and 4-8 inches of space. Plant in moderately rich soil and keep soil moist. Water 2-3 times per week. Harvest biggest leaves but don't remove too many as it will stunt growth. Pinch off tips from long branches to encourage the plant to fill out. |
Beans (Bush) | Plant in partial to full sun and water 3 times per week. Harvest regularly to encourage new pod growth. |
Beans (Pole) | Plant in partial to full sun and water 3 times per week. Plant up to 3 plants per pole or use a trellis to vine. Harvest regularly to encourage new pod growth. |
Beefsteak Heirloom Tomato | Beefsteak likes full sun and plenty of space (1 per 4 sqf) use a a trellis to support vines and growing fruit. Harvest when red and plump but still firm. Letting the tomato ripen too long on the vine makes it more susceptible to insects. |
Beets | Plant your beet seedling in well draining soil, burying it deep enough so its stem is well supported by soil fill and stands upright. Place in partial to full sun and water twice per week. You can harvest at any size but taste best at full size, this is when the beets are protruding out of the dirt. Harvest the leaves as well and add them to a summer salad. |
Carrots (Bolero) | Carrots like well draining soil and partial sun. Bolero grows up to 8 inches in length and like a good soaking twice a week. Harvest around August or September. Harvest the carrot tops and enjoy with a salad. |
Catnip | Catnip likes partial to full sun and likes to be watered when almost dry (likely 1-2 times a week). Plant 18 inches apart. Harvest entire branches and hang dry for several days. Grind up leaves for loose leaf tea. |
Chamomile | Chamomile enjoys full sun and to be watered 1-2 times a week (don't let it dry out though!). Split the roots apart into 3 or 4 tufts 8 inches apart to acheive better ground cover. Harvest flower tops periodically and store in a cool dry place. Grind up flowers for loose leaf tea. |
Cherokee Purple Heirloom Tomato | Plant Cherokee purple in full sun and with additional support. Give plenty of space (1 per 4 square feet) and water 3 times per week. Harvest when fully purple. Over ripening on the vine will make the fruit more susceptible to insects. |
Sungold Cherry Tomato | Sungold likes to be planted in full sun and 1 per square foot. Water 3 times a week. Harvest when cherries are orange and plump. Very rarely do they make into the kitchen without being snacked on first freshly picked from the vine though! |
Tidy Treats Cherry Tomato | Tidy Treats grows best in a container and when given plenty of sun exposure. Water 3 times a week. Harvest when cherries are red and plump. |
Cilantro (Marino) | Cilantro likes the sun but can bolt if weather gets too hot. It grows well when planted tightly with other cilantro (up to 9 per square foot). Plant in deep well draining soil and water up to 3 times per week. Harvest no more than 1/3 of the leaves from a plant at a time. |
Corn Salad (Mache) | Mache enjoys partial to full sun and can be planted tightly (up to 9 per square foot). Plant in a container to enjoy year round as it can grow well into the winter months. Water 3 times per week. Harvest biggest outer leaves and avoid harvesting more than 1/3 of the plant if you choose to grow it continuously. |
Cucumber | Plant cucumber plants in partial to full sun 2 - 3 feet apart in one of two ways: 1. In ground with trellis support; 2. On mounds of dirt 10 to 12 inches high 12 inches round. Thin to one plant when seedlings are over 4 inches tall. Water 3 times per week. |
Dill | Dill loves being in the sun and watered twice a week. Plant it tightly (up to 9 per square foot) Harvest when green and lush. Don't harvest more than 1/3 of the plant at once. |
Eggplant | Plant Eggplant in full sun 18" apart. Water 3 times per week. Too much nitrogen in soil can cause infertility and reduce yield. Harvest when lobes are 7-8 inches long and about 4 inches wide. |
Long Red Cayenne | Cayenne peppers like to be in full sun and only watered once or twice a week depending on the temperatures. Plant them 1 per square foot. Peppers turn red when left to ripen on the branch. The longer they ripen the hotter they get. |
Jalapeno | Jalapeno peppers like to be in full sun and only watered once or twice a week depending on the temperatures. Plant them 1 per square foot. Harvest when peppers are 4 inches long. Leave to ripen on the branch longer to get hotter red chilis. The longer they ripen the hotter they get. |
Jaune Flamme Heirloom Tomato | Plant Jaune Flammed in full sun with well draining soil. Water 2-3 times per week. This indeterminate variety may need support to hold up its fruit laden branches. Harvest when fruit is fully orange and plump. Over ripening on the vine can make the fruit more susceptible to insects. |
Kale (Black Magic) | Plant Lacinato Kale in a large planter or in your garden bed in rows spaced 1 foot apart. Be sure to plant it deep enough so the stem is buried and supported by soil. Kale loves sunlight and grows vigorously well into the Fall. Water 3 times per week or more depending on temperature. Take the whole plant at once or harvest biggest lower leaves continuosly all growing season. Kale will grow taller as you harvest, usually 3-4 feet but, will keep producing. |
Kale (Winterbor) | Plant Winterbor in full sun one per square foot. Water 3-4 times a week depending on temperature. Be sure to plant it deep enough so the stem is buried and supported by soil. Take the whole plant at once or harvest biggest lower leaves continuosly all growing season. Kale will grow taller as you harvest, usually 3-4 feet but, will keep producing. |
Lemon Balm | Lemon Balm enjoys full sun and being watered only 1-2 times per week depending on temperature. Plant it tightly (up to 4 per square foot) Harvest biggest leaves to add lemon flavour to a dish or leave to dry. Grind up to use as a loose leaf tea |
Marigold | Marigolds like sun and to be planted 1 per square foot. Water 2-3 times per week. Trim spent blossoms to encourage new growth. |
Mint | Mint likes partial to full sun and to be watered 3 times per week. Plant in a container as mint can become invasive when not kept in check. Take biggest leaves and never more than 1/3 of the plant. |
Nasturtium | Nasturtium enjoys full sun and being water 1-2 times per week depending on temperature. Plant 1 per square foot and add additional support to help it climb. Lovely edible flowers emerge soon after transplant. Harvest biggest leaves and no more than 1/3 of the plant. Harvest the flowers to add colour to a salad. |
Parsley | Parsley likes to be planted in partial to full sun and be watered 3 times a week. Plant up to 4 per square feet. Take the largest leaves and no more than 1/3 of the plant. |
Pumpkin | Give pumpkin plenty of space to grow at least 2 feet all around and expose to partial to full sun. Plant slightly below grade to encourage water flow to the plant. Leaves can become droopy when exposed to too much sun and heat but quickly recover at dusk. Water 2 to 3 times per week depending on temperature. Harvest when pumpkin is fully orange and stem is weak. It should break off from the plant easily when harvesting. |
Radish (Watermelon) | Plant in partial shade to fuil sun and up to 12 plants per square foot, burying the plant deep enough so its stem is well supported by soil fill and stands upright. Radish likes a soaking once or twice a week depending on temperature. Harvest when radishes are protruding out of the ground. The larger the better. Usually August-September. |
Rainbow Bell Pepper | Rainbow Bell Peppers like to be in full sun and only watered once or twice a week depending on the temperatures. Plant them 1 per square foot. Harvest early for green peppers, or allow to ripen longer to realize full colour. Either red, orange, yellow or purple. |
Rainbow Swiss Chard | Rainbow Swiss Chard likes partial to full sun and to be watered 3 times per week. It can be planted tightly (up to 4 per square foot) and is container friendly. Plant swiss chard deep enough so the stem is supported by soil and stands up right. Harvest outer leaves for continuous supply all growing season or take the whole plant at once. |
Rosemary | Rosemary likes full sun and to be watered 3 times per week as to keep the soil moist. Rosemary doesn't like to get its roots tangled with other herbs so give it a square foot of space to grow. Harvest entire mature limbs but no more than 20% of the plants. Keep in a container to bring indoors and enjoy all year. |
Sage | Sage prefers partial sun most of the day and to be watered 2 times a week. Like most herbs you should give them a square foot of space so they can grow best. Harvest biggest leaves and no more than 1/3 of the plant at once. Sage is a perrenial and will grow back next year. |
San Marzano Heirloom Tomato | San Marzano enjoys being in full sun and to be watered 3 times per week. Plant it so it has plenty of room (1 per 4 square feet) and use supports when branches become laden with fruit. Harvest when fruit is completely red and plump |
Striped German Heirloom Tomato | Plant Striped German in full sun and water it 3 times a week, Use support such as a trellis to hold up branches once they begin to fruit. Give it plenty of space (1 per 4 square feet). Harvest when fruit is about 10 oz and plump. Over ripening on the vine can make the fruit more susceptible to insects. |
Tomatillo | Tomatillos like to be planted in well draining soil in full sun. Water 2-3 times a week depending on temperature. A long branch can benefit from additional support, such as a cage, once the plant begins fruiting. Harvest when husk is dried around the fruit. It should be easily plucked from the branches when ready to be picked. Fruits keep for weeks in a bowl. |
Tomato (Bush Early Girl) | This bush variety of Early Girl does best in full sun and when watered 3 times a week. It's also container friendly. Plant in well draining well. Harvest fruit when completely red. Ripening too long on the branch makes the fruit more susceptible to insects. |
Tomato (La Roma) | This Roma is a bush variety and does not always require additional support. Plant in full sun and water 3 times a week. Harvest fruit when completely red. Ripening too long on the branch makes the fruit more susceptible to insects. |
Zinnia | Zinnias grow best in full sun while in well drained fertile soil. Water 2-3 times a week. Remove spent flowers to encourage new blossoms |
Zucchini | Zucchini prefer partial sun and to be watered twice a week in well draining soil. Give them plenty of space (1 per 4 square feet). Harvest when fruit is a uniform dark green. You should be able to pluck the fruit easily from the plant when it is ready. |
